: Like blockbuster films, many New York restaurants with big-name chefs like to open with red carpet fanfare. Shang was no exception. Hailed as Jean-Georges, Nobu and David Chang rolled into one Hong Kong-bred toque, chef Susur Lee arrived at the chic Thompson LES hotel to shake up the Asian fusion scene. The d├ęcor grabs the attention like a sexy action film with its exotic black lattice work, a wood-slatted ceiling and walnut banquette tables capped with clouds of copper and bronze mesh overhead. Cocktails set a winning theme, especially the dramatic Yen Yen, a blend of cucumber, fresh lime, ginger liqueur and vodka. The family-style menu features some intriguing combinations, such as desert moss lending brine to tofu custard; minted yogurt and pineapple chutney coolly and sweetly balancing chickpea and onion fritters; and squab enriched with layers of foie gras. A signature dish, Singapore slaw, boasts 19 ingredients---a refreshing, shredded pile that includes taro, pickled ginger and pea shoots. Not every dish pops, however, as the seasoning in some, like the oxtail soup dumpling, could use some spicy special effects. Still, diners will remember their meals well after the credits roll.

Worst Service Ever
by GoodTaste on Tue Jun 02, 2009 9:12 am
I went to Shang expecting great food and good enough service. I was sorely dissapointed. I called the restaurant three times to confirm a round table for my group of 10. When I got there they had set us up elsewhere, but what really annoyed me is that they acted like they were not informed of my request. Then, once we were finally seated, we were told the menu had changed from what is advertised on their website. It took the waiter 15 minutes just to recite the prix fix menu to us since they "ran out of menus." On top of all this, the waiter FORGOT to place all orders. Half the table was done with the meal by the time the rest got theirs. The manager apologized for the inconvenience and even sent us a bottle of champagne, but for all the chaos we would have preferred to have gone somewhere else. Lastly, when we left we were told that the pool was closed, when it is in fact OPEN. Even New York Magazine posted that the pool opened last week. Shang is totally disorganized.
