Show Dogs Restaurant Review: Located smack dab in the middle of San Francisco’s dodgy Tenderloin district, Show Dogs is a hidden winner. The restaurant was born into a good lineage---it's the scrappy little brother of the elegant Foreign Cinema in the Mission. Yes, it's a sausage joint, but chef-owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark have brought exacting standards to this triangular storefront with a narrow outside patio. Show Dogs draws an eclectic mix of hipsters, bike messengers and dressed-up theatergoers. The pickled hot-link (it's been soaked in apple cider vinegar and other spices) is accompanied by creamy Oregon blue cheese sauce, a welcome cooler. The burger on a brioche bun was nicely cooked and topped with white cheddar and special sauce, while the fried chicken sandwich, served on the same soft bun, is topped with tangy slaw. But it’s the side of onion rings that shines: slim, crisp and salty, they need no dip. Wash it all down with one of a small selection of beers on tap, most of which are locally produced, as well as a few California wines and artisanal non-alcoholic options.
