THIS RESTAURANT HAS CHANGED NAMES Simon’s Cafe Restaurant Review

: Typically, Moroccan restaurants in L.A. tend to be showy places trying too hard to create an exotic atmosphere, rather than concentrating on one of the world’s great cuisines. Affable chef/owner Simon Elmaleh is more intent on sharing his native cuisine and culture with guests, who tend to be treated exceptionally well whether regulars or not. The dining room is a simple, low-key place with framed vintage beverage posters and Moroccan art. A combination platter of starters is the best way to begin, providing a generous sampling of hummus, baba ghanouj, zaalouk (eggplant and tomatoes) and falafel. We enjoy the spicy “cigars” (phyllo filled with ground beef) and Elmaleh’s fine rendition of pastilla, Morocco’s signature duck and chicken pie dusted with sugar and cinnamon. Several versions of hearty tagines are offered as well, plus a couscous dish with chicken, lamb and spirited merguez sausage. Baklava and chocolate mousse are offered for dessert. The wine list is unfortunately an afterthought, but an evening at Simon’s Café can be very fulfilling.
