The Sky Room offers a true sense of glamour, atop Long Beach’s historic Breakers Hotel, where the likes of Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant used to take in the view over martinis. These days, romance-minded couples might begin with seared foie gras in a port wine reduction, crab-stuffed calamari or caviar before moving on to pepper-crusted ahi with ponzu, New York steak or a veal chop with creamy Cognac sauce, then finishing with a Grand Marnier soufflé. A solid, global wine list is featured, too, but the enduring draw of this beachfront 1930s Art Deco-style landmark remains its old-world charm and never-ending views---shoreline on one side and a resurgent downtown Long Beach on the other. On weekends, live jazz and a red-hot swing scene spice up the room. |
