Yes, that's the smell of smoked pimento wood drifting out of the kitchen at this lively spot in the downtown Stillwater dining scene. Tim McKee and Josh Thoma have returned to their St. Croix Valley roots (their La Belle Vie resided just a few blocks north before moving to Minneapolis), this time in a much more casual format. Chef Shawn Smalley, a longtime member of the McKee-Thoma team, is putting that fragrant smoke to very good use, blackening pork ribs, chicken, beef brisket, shrimp and sausages and serving it in a wide variety of ways: on sandwiches, as part of a combo plate or on platters. Side dishes include fried green tomatoes, corn fritters, mac ‘n’ cheese, and cornbread with jalapeño butter. They're fine, but it's the meat and seafood that makes Smalley's a genuine destination. That, along with the bar's long roster of splashy rum drinks and a good Key lime tart.
