Smoakies Bar-B-Que Restaurant Review:
As soon as you drive up to the one-level structure with simple furnishings and adornments, a chalkboard announces daily specials, and at its base are perched classic country figurines, including a ceramic piggy. Mother Frances Southwell tends to the cooking while son Steve manages the front of the house. Her approach to the Southern fare is solidly homespun and authentic. We liked the slightly spicy pork skins, freshly made in house. As purists insist, sauces are served on the side, and the kitchen makes four of them, so all the basic styles are represented. Sides were first-rate, but the Brunswick stew is a standout; there are no gimmicks or attempts at fancy kitchen work here, just basic, properly seasoned stew. Pulled pork and the ribs were juicy and smoky. Get the very fine banana puddin' for dessert. No alcohol.
