The interior of this small strip-center space is clean and contemporary, with bands of orange breaking up the hard metal look of industrial elements. It's a total contrast with the historic (180 years old) building that houses founder Dave Filipowicz’s original Alpharetta Smokejack. Chef John Umberger oversees both locations while housing his talents in the Cumming store on a daily basis. Standouts are the moist beef brisket, corn pudding (an unusual but worthy side dish), smoked chicken, dry-rubbed spare ribs, and especially the Kansas City-inspired burnt ends, taken from the end of the beef brisket. Caramelized and swathed in the pasilla pepper barbecue sauce (house-made, of course), they're impossible to stop eating. Other dishes range from quesadillas to sandwiches and burgers, and the kids' menu is serious food. Banana pudding is okay, but we could do without the mound of whipped cream on top. Quaffs include domestic and imported beers, and there is a token wine list and full bar. Sweet iced tea is especially good, however. Original location is at 39 S. Main St., Alpharetta, 770-410-7611.
