| L.A., despite its massive size, has precious few Greek restaurants, and Sofi has long been one of the city’s standouts. Dining on the bougainvillea-shaded patio might give you the illusion of being in Mykonos, even though the Aegean Sea is nowhere in sight. Inside, the tiered dining room is warm and intimate, with candlelit tables dressed in blue and white linen, while gracious service makes diners feel like they're guests in a Greek home. Share an array of appetizers like spanakopita (crisp little phyllo spinach turnovers), tender grilled octopus salad or flaming kefalotiri cheese, or spread taramasalata or tzatziki on warm pita bread from a meze platter. We enjoy Sofi’s moussaka, tender lamb shank, chicken or beef souvlaki, and lemony baked chicken. In fact, we like most of the homey Greek food here, concluding with galaktoboureko, a custard-filled phyllo shell. Greece offers more to drink than ouzo---try one of Sofi’s surprisingly good wines from the home country. |
