Sopra Restaurant Review:

Upper East Side Mediterranean favorite Amali has a sister upstairs that embraces an innovative communal dining concept. The convention is not quite family table; nevertheless, it provides a more personal eating experience than the typical restaurant set-up and the balance offers the best of both worlds. A rustic farmhouse-inspired interior with an open loft-style kitchen, old photographs and books lining wooden shelves, shared tables and floor-length windows dominating one wall create a warm and convivial atmosphere. The space is conducive to a shared menu that the chef will create based upon the preferences of the diners as a group in majority rules fashion --- there will be selections, of course. What doesn’t change is the chef's emphasis on locally sourced farm-to-table ingredients that highlight the season. Moreover, only the best yields from participating producers will be accepted. Soft arancini, or rice balls with crunchy shells, freshly caught shrimp, seared lamb, carrots infused with Mediterranean and Moroccan flavors, and a slow-roasted succulent baby pig prepared two ways are some of the dishes you might find. Dessert, such as a creamy Key lime pie and baklava, demonstrate the restaurant's Mediterranean and eclectic influences. Given the collective spirit at Sopra, it's no surprise the wine list is heavily focused on magnums and Jeroboams.
