THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sorrel Restaurant & Bar Restaurant Review:

THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED The young yet experienced team of Benjamin Tish (formerly head chef of Al Duca), Richard Martinez (formerly manager of Zaika and Al Duca) and Robert Saunders (co-founder of Glas and Neat Restaurant in Cannes) is behind this well-priced restaurant and bar in a hitherto unpromising area for eateries. The two-floor premises have a bar upstairs and a spacious restaurant which manages to create an intimate atmosphere downstairs. Here Tish produces dishes relying heavily on the freshest ingredients in a modern European style with a distinctive Italian twist. Try the risotto with peas, sorrel and---as the surprise ingredient---roasted crayfish. Mains run from the likes of char-grilled rib of beef with rosemary and thyme-roasted potatoes and salsa verde to char-grilled tuna with pepperonata, potatoes and caperberries. Desserts include a bitter chocolate-and-hazelnut torte with mascarpone ice cream. This is adventurous stuff and when it works, is excellent, with all the flavours (some unexpected) marrying together perfectly. There are a few glitches (such as over-salting), but these are due to enthusiasm. The pricing is very good indeed, with starters at £6, pastas and risottos at £7-£9, mains at £13 and desserts at £4. There's a set menu from £15 for two courses to £21 for four. Service is delightful.
