THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Soul Restaurant Review

: THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED Jungle-patterned trompe l’oeil “wood” walls, a cluster of exposed filament bulbs and dramatic curtains galore are reminiscent of the KDK Restaurant Group feel, a fact that comes as no surprise since Howard Davis is behind this west suburban venture. Teaming with Le Lan’s Bill Kim, he has created a gem of a place that may well be worth leaving the city’s confines for. Setting aside, we like a lot of things about this place, from its funky, seasonal first courses (beer-battered squash blossoms bursting with herb-flecked goat cheese) to its off-kilter salads (watermelon, pickled watermelon rind, cantaloupe shavings, feta and prosciutto). Main courses may falter a bit, the blackening on Gulf prawns---for example---ending up more bitter than savory. For dessert, a play on a Fudgesicle wins us over for its house-made, jam-filled donut holes alone. The nice (and moderate) wine list, craft beers and creative-enough cocktail menu make us want to stop by for off-the-clock noshes---especially given the whimsical bar menu. Beer-braised soft pretzels? Sure thing.
