There’s a lot to like about the menu at this all-American restaurant on the south branch of the Chicago River. Skewing toward comfort food, it dishes up everything from chicken soup with herbed dumplings to braised lamb shank with red lentils, brick chicken with arugula, fingerlings and toasted hazelnuts, and Idaho rainbow trout with parsley root purée. More often than not, the dishes deliver exactly what you’d expect. At the same time, the tavern-like space---with its dark wood and old-timey pictures---is simply a pleasant place to be, especially since service is efficient and knowledgeable. There’s a short wine list that works with the menu, along with tempting desserts, like s’mores brûlée. The lunch menu largely mirrors dinner offerings with the addition of some lighter fare. Needless to say, given its location, this is a good place to keep in mind when going to the theater.
