: Brothers Brett and Nathan Niebergall shuttered their San Francisco fine dining restaurant Frisée in the Castro neighborhood late in 2008, and yearned to hit the road. It took them more than a year and a half, but they returned to their North Carolina and Texas roots to create Southern Sandwich Co., a truck offering a short and evolving menu of barbecue and other Southern regional fare. The highlights come in the simple details: a glossy, buttery, toasted bun on a snappy smoked beef hot link; the depth of flavor in house-made hot sauces; the dense breading of hush puppies. Where the food at Frisée sometimes suffered for its esoteric complexity, Southern Sandwich Co. is surprisingly more refined. It’s honest, memorable food.
