Southside Spirit House Restaurant Review

: Working late? Really late? Served past midnight and pairing well with a never-a-dull-moment drinks menu, late-night bites at Southside Spirit House are wholesome grown-up California-cuisine comfort food. They are proudly American, as befits this 2,000-square-foot spot's Wild Westishly rustic décor --- wooden floor, repurposed-wood wall accents and handcrafted wooden bar --- with sly winks to faraway lands. Carnitas tacos come with house-pickled jalapeños and red cabbage slaw; Boomtown flatbread pizza is topped with feta cheese, house-made marinara, apples, bacon and Brussels sprouts. Cotija-jalapeño deviled eggs and truffle-oil tater tots stand up stoutly to such fresh-tasting master-class cocktails as the Caged Heat (whiskey, lemon, tamarind, cardamom, ghost pepper) and the Gauge (tequila, chichicapa, chili liqueur, strawberry shrub, gunpowder spices). Artisanal brews range from Delaware's Dogfish Double IPA to local Golden State Cider; wines span the world and include Heidsieck Champagne. Weekday happy hours knock a buck off all drink prices.
