Souvlaki GR Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: Souvlaki GR had its humble beginnings winning awards at food truck competitions in Manhattan. The Souvlaki GR restaurant now creates a sunny Aegean sit-down taverna in midtown, with a festive white-walled front room and blue tables calling up nights on the Greek isles. A narrow back room offers a quieter choice to savor the family’s recipes from Greece.

Likes: You’ll feel like you’ve walked into a Greek oasis, hidden in the middle of Manhattan.
Dislikes: Can be tricky to find under the scaffolding that’s been there for years.

Food & Drinks: A shareable way to start your meal is dipping warm pita into the items on the luscious combo mezedes platter. A fresh horiatiki salad of tomatoes, cucumbers and feta is a bright accompaniment. Ordering a SGR souvlaki is a must, but don’t be surprised: this authentic Greek version comes with hand-cut Greek fries in the middle. Greek specials range from moussakas with meat and vegetarian versions to charcoal-grilled lamb chops and rib-eye, marinated with Greek salt and olive oil; or the lighter chicken or lamb burgers. Baklava is among the desserts. A creative cocktail list adds a Greek twist to favorites like the mojito and Paradise, here made with a touch of mastic, a resin popular in Greece. Mastic is also found in the Psarou Punch Bowl, a libation made with Champagne and Greek tsipouro brandy. Greek wines make a statement with the all-Greek list featuring standouts like Rapsani Old Vines or traditional retsina and seven wines available by the glass.
