Dining room at SPQR, San Francisco, CAThe team behind A16 has the Midas touch when it comes to regional Italian restaurants. This venture is a casually charming, 45-seat osteria with Roman-inspired cuisine, offering a quaint, cozy, buzzing ambience that’s popular with locals. The wine list under Shelley Lindgren features 25-plus Italian wines by the taste, glass and carafe, including 60 bottles hailing from Lazio. The bright young staff has an infectious enthusiasm, and the cooks under talented chef Matt Accarrino fire dishes with astounding speed and precision in the tiny exhibition kitchen; the best seats in the house comprise a small dining bar directly in front of the action. Portions might be small but tend to be rich. Case in point: the full impact of the giant raviolo topped with truffle makes its mark after only a few bites. A crispy pig’s ear is deeply satisfying, its saltiness cleverly balanced with jammy pickled jalapeño. Pork and pickling come together again in the pork belly croccante. Pastas are hearty and robust, such as the agnolotti, plump pasta pillows stuffed with goat cheese and punctuated by tart braised artichoke. Lamb shoulder is so tender it could be spooned off the bone. Ricotta fritters served with smoked maple syrup present like delectable Roman donuts (or hush puppies). Olive oil gelato and other desserts add further sultry Italian flavor.
