Steak 'n Shake Restaurant Review: Time stands still at this chain that's been filling the diner-style niche since the 1930s. The gleaming black-and-white tile persists, and it's still fun to pile into a booth with the entire family. There's no steak, but rather all-beef steakburgers and steak franks, along with triple-deckers, patty melts and shooters (or sliders in local parlance). Chili is another tradition, and it is available Cincinnati-style with spaghetti, diced onions and shredded cheese. The long menu also offers breakfast items, chicken sandwiches and salads, and sides cover more than just fries (baked beans and onion rings are two choices). Hand-dipped shakes come in flavors such as Nutella, but if you're counting calories, know that the fruit and yogurt parfait is just fine. At the same time, we'd advise diners to save space for the hot fudge or strawberry sundae.
