| This attractive establishment showcases a cascading water wall and a dynamic modern décor that wraps around a sushi bar and a separate drinks bar. Hardwood floors and earth-toned tiles support a classy design, although they also encourage a high noise level. The sea salt-and-chili pepper calamari is a nice tangle of fried, crisp calamari---not at all greasy---with two sauces, all presented in a formal Asian-influenced manner (beware of the quite-hot honey chili paste). Small plates are a good way to go here, starting with the sushi. Tasty walnut-shiitake mushroom dumplings and a substantial Asian braised short ribs dish (easily enough to share) are just two examples. In fact, the latter, with a side of wasabi mashed potatoes, make a meal. Vietnamese "shaken beef" presents very tender cubed tenderloin on greens with onions and cherry tomatoes. For dessert, go with the chocolate maki rolls, dusted with coconut to suggest rice and dabbed with caramel sauce to allude to soy sauce. The wine list has been expanded substantially, but still doesn’t serve as a good companion for this food. Big-name items are the focus, so if you must have Silver Oak, go for it. |
