Restaurants in tourist-heavy parts of town have rarely had much culinary success. Stella Maris, an Irish-esque eatery in the South Street Seaport area, is one of the exceptions. But don’t mistake this for old-school Irish pub grub. Stella Maris best represents the “new” Ireland---the one with the chic dining scene, featuring topnotch chefs cooking up worldly, inspired dishes with Irish ingredients. Settle in the cozy leather banquette and dive into the roasted beet and orange salad with escarole, tangy orange vinaigrette and goat cheese; the fritto misto including fried shrimp and calamari, market fish, vegetables and aïoli; or a half dozen of some of the freshest oysters this side of the Hudson. We also recommend the grilled fish sandwich with pickled vegetables, cilantro, jalapeños and spicy mayonnaise. Entrées are first-rate, such as the steak frites and the roasted salmon with lemon grass and ginger broth, tomato, bok choy and basmati rice.
