This kitschy Italianate restaurant import from San Francisco has managed to turn garlic into a theme, and is popular with tourists, kids and rowdy private parties. Our biggest complaint with The Stinking Rose is the feeling of being rushed out so the management can usher in the next gimmick-seeking party. But if you’re in the right spirit, the fun can begin with a “Gartini” at the bar or a trip to the garlic-themed gift shop. Start with the garlicky potato-onion soup or bagna calda, a cast iron skillet filled with garlic cloves cooked in olive oil and butter that you smear on French bread, perfect for sharing. The menu offers such specials as 40-clove garlic chicken or garlic-encrusted baby-back ribs, but sticking with the pizzas and pastas renders the most reliable results. But do try the garlic ice cream for dessert! |
