THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Straits Restaurant Restaurant Review:

Chef Chris Yeo closed his original Geary Street restaurant and opened this stylish retreat atop the Westfield San Francisco Centre---one of a growing list of hip Straits properties. A slick dining room and popular bar are dark chocolate-hued and low lit, with dusky orange hanging lanterns, golden Buddhas and decorative glass room dividers. Lounge music thumps a welcome to dates and groups of upbeat shoppers. The large and mostly Singaporean menu of shareable salads, curries, seafood and noodle dishes (there’s even a raw bar) strikes an appealing balance between contemporary and happily home-style. One wishes the provenance of each dish was provided---flavors at this cultural crossroads can be unusual and memorable---but servers seem far from eager to pace, help or educate. As long as Yeo’s finger food---satays, roti prata and samosas---entertains with lively dipping sauces, and strong cocktails pop with lychee, ginger or lemon grass, diners don't seem to mind. More complex dishes, however, such as the whole, standing striped bass or lamb shank korma served on the bone are less fun without the requisite execution, service and accoutrements to back them up. Pastry chef Eunice Lee is to be commended for her menu of subtle treats involving cassava, ube, macapuno and other exotic delights.
