Sugar Beets Restaurant & Bar Restaurant Review: The name pays homage to Oxnard’s agricultural history, but Sugar Beets’ vibe is thoroughly modern, from the food and décor to the nightclub it turns into after hours. The kitchen combines international flavors --- Cajun fried oysters, three-cheese baked phyllo and a blue cornmeal-crusted chile relleno, for example --- and dishes are presented with a contemporary flair. Grilled tenderloin medallions are drizzled with a blackberry Cabernet reduction and served alongside black truffle mac ‘n’ cheese. A flat-iron steak is marinated in chili sauce and paired with green peppercorn brandy glaze. Vegetarian options include a hearty potato pie made with layered caramelized onions, basil, sun-dried tomatoes and wild mushrooms. For something different, try the grilled watermelon salad: baby greens dressed with a shallot vinaigrette are served with barbecued shrimp and fried Navajo bread atop a warm round of watermelon. Specialty cocktails, like the orange and ginger martini, are popular.
