Located in the completely renovated and elegant Waterside Marina del Rey shopping plaza, sugarFISH is a casual offshoot of Studio City's Sushi Nozawa. It is the rare sushi restaurant where sushi isn't prepared within view from behind a sushi bar (that activity takes place in the kitchen). Instead, diners sit at a long wavy counter where they can admire the soothing blue and green bubbles (from the fish breathing, perhaps?) painted on the wall. There are also tables along a white wall, which reminds us of a sandy beach. Note that reservations are not taken, and you will be seated on a first come, first served basis. Choose from one of the three menus displayed on huge TV screens; they are updated daily according to the freshest catches of the day. As at the Valley restaurant, you have to trust the chef, therefore the name of the menus: "Trust Me Lite" ($19.50), "Trust Me" ($28.50) and "THENozawa" ($35). Chef Kazunori Nozawa, who is not in the kitchen here, has entrusted his chef to execute his trademark menu of simple and pure sushi, same for the rolls. Drinks include Sapporo beer, cold green tea, and four different sakés.
