It's a nostalgic hideaway where friends laze away long afternoons, but big, breezy Sunny Side is also cutting-edge: as Albany's first Certified Green restaurant, it offers low-carbon-emission menu options, based on "eco-chef" Aaron French's calculations of the miles each ingredient traveled before reaching his kitchen. Breakfast is king. French's extravagant invention is the Alameda: ham or other savory fillings sandwiched between french toast slices, behatted with two over-easy eggs, house-made hollandaise and a balsamic reduction. Farmers markets inspire an ever-changing array of salads, sandwiches, egg dishes, pastries and pancakes. Carnivores and herbivores will feel equally at home among the hearty scrambles, burgers, breakfast burritos and Benedicts. Made with humanely raised meat, a chicken-salad sandwich includes cranberries and cashews. The avocado-Swiss scramble could fortify you for an alpine hike.
