Sushi Zushi is hip and casual, and has apparently struck a chord with locals if its expansion is any clue. On the appetizer agenda, we go for Green Mussels Dynamite in spite of the unconventional chipotle mayo that accompanies them (the owners are from Mexico City). But we are equally impressed with pristine Sea Garden Squid with brilliant green seaweed and sesame oil, the battered soft-shell crab are crunchy and designed for dipping, and the traditional pot stickers prove the kitchen can do simple with swagger. A creation conjuring California more than Kyoto is the rainbow roll, a dragon-like creature with scales of avocado, tuna and salmon applied to a roll filled with crab, cucumber and more avocado. It’s just one of many such as a Bora-Bora, a San Antonio, and a Cajun-meets-Mexican toreado crawfish roll. Several of the “zushis” and sashimis are also suitable foils for one of SZ's stable of fine sakés in designations from “very mellow” to “extremely dry”; theirs is the largest selection in town, and drinking them cold is counseled. Various yakisoba noodle dishes, yakitori skewers, teppanyaki plates and Japanese “comfort foods” such as the breaded pork cutlet are also available, along with the snow crab and salmon skin sunomonos with cucumber and seasoned vinegar.
