Most LA dinner and dancing dates require a car ride between the taking-in and burning-off of calories. Downtown now sports a venue where both can be enjoyed, is accessible by Metro, and offers striking city views to boot. The penthouse suite of a Wilshire Boulevard office building has been totally transformed into a futuristic indoor-outdoor dining space and a dance club. The unique Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant, which also incorporates trees and branches into its pop décor, attracts a mix of young clubgoers as well as an older crowd enjoying a wide variety of sushi, robata and beautifully-presented Asian fusion dishes. Traditionalists can stick with miso, edamame and sushi at the six-seat sushi bar, while more adventurous diners can enjoy artistic-looking creations on the patio 21 floors high such as "Pop Art Crab"---blue crab and avocado wrapped in paper---and, our favorite, "Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura Purse," courtesy of co-executive chefs Kenny Yamada (Katsu-ya, SHU) and Stan Ota. Diners who don’t like Japanese cuisine can indulge in baby lamb chops accompanied by a generous portion of mashed potatoes and homemade potato chips, as well as a satisfying warm molten chocolate cake. The hip, high-rise restaurant features a full bar and a good selection of wine and sake, which (if ordered cold) is served by the attentive staff in a cute wooden sake bucket. Note that dining at Takami does not guarantee entry to Elevate, so call ahead.
