| Tango owner Danielle Philippa refers to the cuisine at her restaurant as Pan-Latin. The term refers to dishes and preparations associated with New World cuisines of Latin America as well as the foods of the Old World---Spain and Portugal. As we enter, we duck around the lively bar, where we have been thrilled with wonderful flamenco guitar one night and experienced techno-house music another. This tall corner space feels almost cavernous, and straw-colored walls make a perfect backdrop for a collection of vibrant art. The food is equally dazzling: charcuterie and cheese starters are augmented by a list of surprising ceviches (which include concoctions like habanero-spiced crab and tequila- and vanilla-cured salmon aside from the usual lime-cilantro standbys) and creative entrées. Bistec La Falda flirts with Caribbean flavors (jerk rub) and is served with a papaya-habanero sauce. No less than five paella dishes are available, many using local, seasonal seafood. Also a treat: the wonderfully-informed selection of wines, sherries and ports. The bar at Tango is often SRO, especially during happy hour with its bargain appetizers and mojitos. But that’s never stopped us from enjoying a night here. |
