There was a time not too long ago that this sleek, somewhat sexy restaurant would have impressed us, but Angelenos have become jaded when it comes to sushi. Now, only the very best generates much of a buzz. Like the short-lived sushi bar that preceded Tani in this very space, the raw fish here is more than satisfactory---nicely marbled salmon; tender, oversize scallops sprinkled with sea salt; briny-sweet uni---yet it does not excite. Miso-marinated black cod and a rich pairing of foie gras and Kobe beef are among the more ambitious specialties, though most of the Old Pasadena crowd goes for the long list of signature rolls which have become predictable fare throughout Southern California. The narrow room is more attractive than ever, with ebony-stained tables lined against silver-grey walls and a colorful cherry blossom mural behind the long sushi bar.
