Taos Pizza Out Back Restaurant Review: Dubbed “the Outback” by locals, this pizza joint is like a lot of places in Taos --- a shade funky, a shade left of center and very memorable. The building is decorated with rusting metal signs and vintage gas pumps, while the kitchen rolls out massive thick-crust pies that can stand up to a mountain of toppings. The specialty pizzas are very popular; the Sandy’s Special includes marinated chicken strips, bell peppers, pineapple and barbecue sauce, while the Shredder features smoked mozzarella, green chile, mushrooms, your choice of meat and a homemade pesto vinaigrette. You can also customize pizzas and giant single slices --- in addition to the usual suspects, toppings include black beans, capers and toasted walnuts. Pies can be made gluten-free and vegan, and the Outback sources organic flour, greens and vegetables. You can also forgo pizza for a fresh salad, heaped with mixed greens, alfalfa sprouts, purple onions and plenty of pesto dressing.
