Tapas Brindisa Restaurant Review:

Tapas have come a long way in London, courtesy of places like Tapas Brindisa (the company’s original venue right by Borough Market) and Barrafina. This is a smart, rather impersonal space with small tables packed together and an open kitchen and bar at the end. Dishes have evolved as well, and plates like lentil stew with soft goat’s curd, beetroot with blue cheese and walnut vinaigrette, olive oil mashed potatoes with toasted almonds and pepper, or battered hake with aïoli are not what you would have expected a few years back. The restaurant prepares them notably well, and they pay homage to the best ingredients. Desserts are also carefully prepared: try turron (a type of Spanish nougat) with pistachio ice cream; even simple pears are cooked in the best Rioja and come with saffron ice cream. But prices are high, very high for tapas. For wine, be guided by the sommelier; the wine list is a glorious Spanish affair. Also Tapas Brindisa, 18-20 Southwark St., SE1, 020-7357 8880; Casa Brindisa, 7-9 Exhibition Rd., SW7, 020-7590 0008; and Brindisa Chorizo Grill, just outside the shop in Borough Market.
