Next to Ago and Lucques, Taste is a more casual option on that part of Melrose Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard, for both lunch and dinner. Nestled in a house that has been converted into a restaurant, you actually feel you are eating in a home, especially since the prices are reasonable. The décor is comfortable, with leather-covered walls, red banquettes and a large patio. Chef Cathy Halter has put together a California menu, executed with simplicity. The salmon spring rolls are crispy ($8); the pear and caramelized onion pizza is tasty ($7.50); the grapefruit salad with fennel and avocado is light ($8.25). Spicy orange-ginger shrimp ($18.25) or the smoked duck breast ($17.75) are options for main courses. A cheese plate with a selection of three cheeses ($11) is available before the desserts which range from a flourless chocolate cake ($7.50) to a caramelized pear on almond paste ($8) to a berry cobbler ($7). Only available at lunch, try the sandwiches (club or curried chicken) or the burgers (Kobe beef or ahi tuna). They are a good excuse for a relaxing lunch break.
