Thai Select Restaurant Review: In a city that’s filled with Thai restaurants serving the standard dishes, big props go to this Midtown West Thai eatery for its ambitious attempt to tie in flavors from around the globe. It hits and misses the mark. The curry puffs, while not as bold as we would like, possess just the right amount of chewy and crispy. The flower-shaped crab croquettes score high on presentation, but the taste is overwhelmed by too much fried batter (in order to make the pretty shape) and underwhelming due to too little crab. The triple lime fish---steamed tilapia topped with a chili lime sauce---is a solid winner; that is, until the spice kicks in, eclipsing the sweet and sour flavors as well as the taste of the fish. The chicken satay, accompanied by a large dipping cup of sweet peanut sauce, hits the spot. Other dishes worth trying include the grilled marinated pork tenders tossed with red onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, roasted rice and fresh herbs in spicy lime dressing; and cashew nut tofu. Dessert, of course, will save the day, especially the fried honey banana and the delicately fried ice cream.
