| The gleaming Herzog winery is an anomaly on the agricultural and industrial plains of Oxnard, as is the contemporary kosher restaurant inside. Chef Todd Aarons worked at Zuni Café in San Francisco and The Savoy in New York. Here, at Tierra Sur, his fanciful dishes avoid dairy of any kind. Southwestern flavors work their way into much of his cooking. His skirt steak, for example, is marinated with chipotle chilis before it's served with sweet potato fries and savoy cabbage slaw. A three-course, wine-paired menu usually costs around $40 for lunch and $60 for dinner. House-made organic corn tortillas are filled with anchiote-marinated fish of the day, along with green tomatillo and mango salsa. Duck is served two ways (seared breast and confit of the leg) with corn cakes and gooseberry sauce. Lamb chops come with a Moroccan stew and chickpea fries. In addition to Herzog wines (available in two-ounce and larger pours), beer, ale, Cognac and brandy---all kosher---are offered. Desserts include orange almond flan, flourless chocolate cake and assorted sorbets. |
