Husband-and-wife team Marco Moreira and Jo-Ann Makovitzky have set the bar high when it comes to serving dishes that reflect the best of the season. Chef Moreira, who hails from Brazil, takes full advantage of the nearby Union Square Greenmarket, and occasionally adds seafood inspirations from sister restaurant 15 East (a few doors away). While the menu changes throughout the year, signature dishes include California sea urchin and angel hair carbonara, a lovely precursor to seared diver sea scallops served with foie gras. Meals may start with a variety of raw seafood appetizers, such as local oysters served on the half shell or sashimi and tartare of bluefin tuna, dressed with a refreshing pickled green papaya, lychee and kalamansi vinaigrette over hearts of palm. A salad of shaved fennel, frisée, Cato Farm cheddar and roasted Bosc pears dressed with hazelnut vinaigrette unites interesting flavors. Entrées are serious comfort food, prepared with finesse. Poached Maine lobster took on a different hue with fennel, green and white celery, peppers and lemon balm. Vegetarian choices including a risotto and house-made tofu along with equally refined duck, fish and steak creations are offered, with vegetable sides such as local corn succotash or olive oil-poached fingerling potatoes. Desserts are inventive: ricotta mousse with huckleberry compote, Concord grape sorbet and lavender honey; and caramelized Granny Smith apple tart served with warm crème fraîche. Wine suggestions are well advised; a sweet Côteaux du Layon, for example, complements both small plates and larger courses.
