More fun than most sushi joints, that’s for sure, Tokyo Pop, at the Southern tip of Morningside Heights on the Upper West Side, is the place to go for seriously creative sushi and French-Japanese fusion cuisine in a very un-serious environment. Your host---when he’s not mingling with the staff and guests---will attentively explain the menu to you as well as the long list of unusual sakés offered. Go on Monday night to enjoy the best of chef Masaki Nakayama with his unlimited sushi extravaganza---but get there early, as the tables book up quickly. Saturday is a carnivore’s delight: Japanese Steak Night, offering steaks, burgers and chops paired with four kinds of sauces. The service can be a little off-center, but that’s only in keeping with the rest of this definitely non-traditional Japanese eatery which bills itself as a Japanese bistro.
