| Tommy Bahama’s Island Grille in Corona Del Mar Plaza has transformed from a kitschy Caribbean-inspired place to more of a casual California restaurant with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The bright décor, tropical greenery and Caribbean artwork is still there, but toned down a bit for a more family-casual and Newport business crowd. Ladies-who-lunch show up here at midday, while couples, families and big groups celebrate in the evenings with strong cocktails, cold brews and some good by-the-glass wine selections. Chef Jackie Nabong does a good job of bringing some island flair to each dish, yet still keeping it rustic and flavorful. For appetizers, try the sweet-and-spicy coconut shrimp, smoky grilled artichoke and refreshing halibut ceviche with mango papaya chutney. The ahi salad is surprisingly different with its seared tuna and tart apples. The Cuban-style barbecued pork sandwich satisfies hearty appetites and picky palates. Desserts are just as appetizing like the sweet-and-tart Key lime pie and the creamy butterscotch pudding. After eating, stroll through the neighboring Tommy Bahamas store for some upscale beach-inspired clothing and home décor. |
