THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tonno Rosso by Faz Restaurant Review:
This is the sole Mediterranean restaurant nestled among a sea of higher-profile Japanese, French and Californian neighbors. The interior is unpretentious and somewhat nondescript and the ambience is calm. The menu hails from a variety of Italian regions, and since Faz has taken the helm, it includes side trips to the Middle East and Asia. A standout appetizer is the smoked venison carpaccio, with a satisfying texture that feels and tastes like a juicy beef sashimi. Instead of wasabi, it is served with a kicky side of Dijon mustard and freshly grated, fluffy curls of horseradish. Additional appetizers include an antipasto platter laden with expected favorites like grilled eggplant, salami, pecorino cheese and a saucy ratatouille, along with Eastern Mediterranean options like a trio of hummus. The Fazzoletti pasta triangles clash with too many flavors, but the entrée of hulking sea scallops is delicious with the Japanese-like simplicity of its broth. A number of entrées are roasted in the fireplace that cozily dominates the center of the restaurant, including a pork chop, a juicy rack of lamb that borders on over-smoked, and some poultry dishes. Desserts are a bit run-of-the-mill, but get points for being made on-site.
