Toscana Ristorante Restaurant Review:
Toscana’s prominent downtown location has seen several other restaurant concepts in the past; perhaps almost-Italian will best standard-issue sushi and fairly-good French. Initial menu offerings tended toward the tiresomely predictable, but an evolution has taken place; things are not necessarily more Tuscan, but they are more inventive. An appetizer of piquillo peppers stuffed with diminutive ditalini pasta needed just a little more cohesion to shine, and panko-coated fried zucchini batons were at least expertly fried and served with a welcome basil aïoli. Gnocchi did not make the grade, however, and chicken carbonara fell slightly short as well. But a carpaccio of roasted beets with arugula was a standout. A seat at the streetside windows is recommended if you want to see and be seen.
