| Sensing a market weary of anything French (though he is still pushing it at his downtown location, Le Midi), Jean-Francois Poujol first flirted with Asian Fusion, then settled on a somewhat generic version of New American for the re-baptized Tost, which has a bar that is also refurnished and outfitted with entertainment. The menu escapes total predictability by including appetizers such as truffled asparagus with poached egg, but the mussels with chorizo and pork belly with parsnip purée, though well-executed, have a hit-parade air about them. So do the beer-braised short ribs, though we would order them again. Seared rack of lamb is welcome in any setting, and the kitchen does a first-rate job of both cooking and accessorizing with braised chickpeas. We have liked a sturdy but delicately flavored lemon panna cotta, and wish only for a little more peanut participation in the chocolate peanut butter tart. Warning: sounds of evening entertainment stray into the dining room. |
