With its modern dining room, friendly service and tempting menu, family-run Trey B Cakes is a welcome option in the midtown lunch scene. Expansive pastry cases greet diners, whetting appetites with dozens of sweet and savory selections. Having begun as a gourmet bakery, the eatery has now expanded to include sandwiches, salads and soup during the midday hours. At first glance, the menu appears simple and somewhat limited, but the creative, well-crafted dishes pack a punch. The signature recipe, the “stud muffin,” is a tender, flavorful meatloaf wrapped in a delicate puff pastry topped with herbed mashed potatoes --- the cupcake-like concoction satisfying the strongest comfort food craving. Other options include a meatball sandwich, chicken potpie and bacon cheddar quiche. A visit wouldn’t be complete without indulging in something from the bakery case: cake is sold by the slice, or opt for a mini fruit tart, s’mores brownie or salted caramel macaron.
