The busy bar and dining room have a supper club atmosphere that nicely suits the Palm Springs scene, deliberately evoking memories of mid-century high times. With a wide variety of creative cocktails, running from the spicy mojito to a chi chi colada, partner and barman Ranz Wienert keeps the patio and lounge humming. Chef-partner Tony Di Lembo has created an eclectic menu culled from the most popular dishes at his previous Los Angeles ventures (Indigo, Tahiti and Chippy's Diner). Small plates, sandwiches, salads and pizzas keep both bar patrons and diners happy, but if you're in the mood for something more substantial, then there are plenty of entrées to choose from, including Southern fried chicken (resurrected from the chef's student days in New Orleans) and a miso-glazed Atlantic salmon rice bowl. The crowd gets younger as the evening progresses.

Bad Attitude, and a Bad Experience
by Ralfowler on 07/29/2008

I took some out of town guests to Tropicale recently. I've been there numerous times, and enjoyed the setting, and put up with the food, which can be hit or miss. It's more about the "scene" than it is about the food. Anyway, I took some guests there and were seated at an outside table on a very muggy night. The misters were going full blast, and soon our table was enveloped in a bank of mist so heavy I couldn't see the people sitting across the table from me. Our table was wet with condensation, as were we. The food came and we asked the waiter if he could turn off the misters, and he sent the owner over to us. We politely asked him to turn them off, and he said "fine." Five minutes later, the misters were back on, going full blast. Our food was dripping wet at this point, and we sent back half of our food because of it. We were appalled, but decided to just pay the bill and get out of there.
