On the verge of transcending the Hollywood hotel dining stigma, Twist has a lot of potential but a little too much ambition. The small plates are satisfying but the selection a bit too broad.

On the second floor of the new Renaissance Hotel at Hollywood & Highland, Twist serves both as the hotel's casual breakfast and lunch room, and in the evening transforms into something dark, elegant and exotic. The cuisine is international and the fatal flaw may be that Twist's ambitious staff overextends itself. In addition to satays, crab cakes and Thai barbecue pork, there's tenderloin with foie gras and even a sushi bar at night. Dishes are made for sharing, and each diner is presented with a small share plate as well as chopsticks and serving spoons. At lunch there's the option of adding a cold salad buffet to the entrée price for only a few additional dollars. Considering the fact that the buffet includes a lovely selection of cookies and pastries, it is an excellent value. With its friendly staff and Hollywood views, Twist could transcend the Hollywood hotel dining stigma, if only the kitchen would pare back its offerings to focus on the simple, Asian flavors they produce so well.
