In a neighborhood that has been culturally transformed more than once in the past half-century is this landmark all-American diner that’s a throwback to the Alhambra of the 1950s, when carhop service was offered in the parking lot. Today, it’s as busy as ever, attracting a multicultural clientele hungry for burgers, chicken-fried steak, fish ‘n’ chips, pastas, or even baby-back ribs. The menu is enormous, but the best advice is to play it safe with the traditional diner specialties that have been more or less perfected over the decades. Reliable are the burgers, a roasted turkey dinner with all the trimmings, breakfasts (served all day), and the quality shakes that take you back in time.
