Given the fact that the Union Cattle Co. has a mechanical bull in one corner of the dining room, you might expect the place to be a rowdy joint, but this is Hermosa Beach. Customers are in their thirties and forties and dressed in expensive casual clothes---a crowd that wouldn't set foot in a real Texas dive. You can get pretty good burgers or ribs here, or a decent bowl of pasta, but better to select one of chef Fernando Rodriguez’s more interesting dishes. Considering it’s a "cattle company," there are plenty of steak options: filet mignons, rib-eyes and porterhouses of varying sizes, pair-able with sauces like béarnaise, creamy mushroom or blue cheese glaze. Non-steak highlights include crab-stuffed mushrooms, pork chops in apple brandy sauce and baked halibut with lemon-basil sauce. To drink, there’s a full bar, plus a small wine list. As the evening progresses, people begin riding the bull. After a couple of rounds with the bull, reward yourself with dessert, either bread pudding with Jack Daniel’s whiskey cream sauce or the s’mores platter with tabletop "mini campfire" to cook them. For non-bull-riders, there’s a quiet beach-view terrace.
