Union Saloon Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant: If a hunting lodge mated with a jazz lounge, they would birth Union Saloon, where the U-shaped dark wood bar invites everyone to gather round and the heavy leather gains light from the gold accents. Nestled into a single-floor building in Wallingford, the communal set-up and warm service give this neighborhood hang a welcoming feel.
Likes: Friendly, welcoming service; cocktails (and their prices).
Dislikes: No table seating (all booths and barstools).
Food & Drinks: Food offerings, too, invite sharing, with crispy butterball potatoes in a celery-mustard dressing, fried chicken and a caramelized onion dip. The menu doesn’t seem to have a theme, but the lack of cohesion plays into the laidback, come-as-you-are, don’t-forget-to-order-a-slice-of-cake (that’s German chocolate or carrot) vibe. The wine list is short and sweet, but the real focus here is the eminently affordable classic cocktails, including multiple Old Fashioned options.
