Veeraswamy Restaurant Review:

The owners of Chutney Mary, Amaya and Masala Zone took this venerable establishment, London’s first Indian restaurant, founded in 1926, and gave it a makeover resulting in an over-the-top décor of chandeliers, rich colours and a decorative theme of vivid turbans on the walls, along with Bengal paintings and silvered screens. The menu offers a wide variety of inspiration, from the Maharajahs to street snacks. Regionally inspired, try the likes of Nihari lamb --- a slow-cooked aromatic dish from Lucknow --- or sea bream steamed in a banana leaf with chilli and mustard sauce. We also recommend the white chicken curry and Kerala chicken stew from Syrian Christian south Indian cooking. Breads are first-rate; vegetarians are accommodated nicely. A well-researched wine list finely complements the complexity of flavours on the menu. Service is slick, stylish and multicultural. Set 2-course lunch, pre-theatre Mon.-Sat. £17.50; 3 courses £20.50; Sun. lunch £24.
