Dining room at Velvet Room, San Francisco, CA

Velvet Room Restaurant Review

: San Francisco’s dining scene often falls short when it comes to posh, see-and-be-seen restaurants. Enter the Velvet Room, the über hip restaurant inside the Clift hotel, stomping grounds for the city’s glitterati and home base to nearly every visiting celebrity. The spacious room’s dramatic décor (albeit somewhat ’90s inspired) from its days as Asia de Cuba is still intact: floor-to-ceiling velvet curtains and Murano glass lamps and a centerpiece etched-mirror communal table shaped like a cross. The big changes come with executive chef Ewart Wardhaugh’s fresh, seasonal menu featuring more than 30 local farms, ranches and food artisans. Look for simple dishes such as asparagus drizzled with a mild blue cheese sauce, paired with a poached egg and Marshall’s Farm honeycomb. Arctic char with warm chanterelles and arugula also features a fresh balance of flavors. Potted rock shrimp falls short, as does a clarified heirloom tomato gazpacho---it arrives translucent in appearance and too sweet, missing the boldness and richness of the tomatoes. A boutique wine list offers bottles from around the world but is largely focused on California vintners. Memorable desserts include a seasonal cobbler brimming with berries and accented with red velvet croutons.
