Vienna Restaurant & Historic Inn Restaurant Review: When husband and wife team Jonathan and Lisa Krach (rhymes with “Bach”) bought the property at 14 South Street in Southbridge, Massachusetts, the bank didn’t “get” their concept for a place that welcomes guests with an old-world European feel and cuisine to match. More than a decade later, this convivial New England inn is one of the principal reasons why guests should visit the central Massachusetts village. The main dining rooms, done in dark walls and white woodwork, are outfitted with vintage chandeliers and working fireplaces. Starters prepared by küchenmeister Jonathan and served by hostess Lisa include wine-marinated Bismarck herring, braised rabbit and seared Nantucket sea scallops. Traditional German dishes include smoked pork shank, veal schnitzel Cordon Bleu and juicy sauerbraten pot roast. From the inn's wine cellar, which holds over 1,000 bottles and 100 different labels, you might sample a 2005 Huber Hugo Grüner Veltliner or a 2004 Rosenblum Petite Syrah. We suggest ending your meal with a slice of the two-layer buttery cream-filled Black Forest torte or the dense flourless "Emperor's" torte. Try the tequila-honey-lemon ice digestif, a specialty of the house, too.
