The Vigilucci’s empire has expanded to La Jolla, where its seafood, steak and chop house occupies the former Cendio space. Utterly transformed, the neutral décor is elegant, the lighting is dim and the mood romantic. The menu is comprised of classic Italian seafood dishes as well as an extensive steak selection. We prefer to skip appetizers like the pan-fried crab cakes with arugula and the seared scallops with baby spinach (too much salt, not enough crunch) and move straight to the homemade pasta. The strongly flavored but tasty seafood ravioli is drizzled with a creamy lobster sauce and served with two plump grilled shrimp. The pappardelle con porcini is perhaps overly doused with white truffle oil, but still wins us over. The best dishes are in the carne section. Prime rib-eye chop alla Florentina is well cooked and paired with fettuccine Alfredo. The blackened double-bone pork chop is a hearty portion, especially when served with the Vigilucci’s one-pound baked potato piled with fixings. Desserts are mainly traditional and include tiramisu, cannoli and a decadent chocolate cake with vanilla gelato.
