This attractive, airy second-floor space is located over Draeger's Marketplace, an upscale grocery store that's the source of seasonal bounty culled for Viognier's California cuisine prepared with classic French technique. Chef Preston Dishman, a North Carolina native, creates a versatile, wide-ranging menu that shows off his cooking chops (and occasional Southern sensibility). Pig’s trotters are served croquette style with tender, flavorful results. Grilled cuttlefish are sweet and succulent, paired with white endive and juicy peaches. Even the menu’s no-brainer dishes have clearly been given chef’s fullest attention: gnocchi dressed in a light Parmesan cream and studded with butternut squash are simple yet memorable. The same goes for a robust root vegetable tagine drizzled with a sauce of blistered tomatoes. Desserts are irresistible, from the nostalgic baked Alaska with huckleberries and almond graham crust, to mini churros paired with a dipping pool of spiced chocolate. A well-rounded wine list offers lots of variety and the full bar touts a standout cocktail menu.
